Mondavi’s Keeper of the Flame

Despite all the changes at Robert Mondavi Winery over the past decade, there has been one constant that ties the past to the present: the talent and dedication of Genevieve Janssens. Among many employees who remain faithful to the winery's spirit and style, longtime winemaker Janssens is a vital link to a bygone era that ended in 2004 when Mondavi sold to Constellation. (Robert Mondavi's wife, Margrit, is another important link.) Now, at age 62, Janssens finds herself in the unique position to steer Mondavi on a new course. The key is capitalizing on its greatest asset: its prime vineyard sites in Napa Valley, notably the To Kalon Vineyard. Wine Spectator's James Laube explains.
