Bordeaux in the Black Hills

A public-health luminary brings his passion for fine wine to Rapid City, S.D.

South Dakota may not seem like a hotbed of wine culture. But that hasn't stopped Rapid City, S.D., residents Jeff Henderson and his wife, Patricia, from expanding their collection. Since their marriage in 2000, the couple—members of the Lakota Sioux and Navajo communities—purchased much wine at auction. Now, after having built a 2,200 bottle-capacity cellar, they're focused on honing their palates and exploring the burgeoning wine scene in the Black Hills. Wine Spectator's Lizzie Munro explains.
