Robert Lawrence Balzer became America's first wine journalist, an unabashed cheerleader for California wine as the industry matured, and one of the country's preeminent wine educators. Balzer died Dec. 2 at the age of 99 at his home in Orange, Calif. Wine Spectator's James Laube reports.
