
In 1981, Wine Spectator debuted the Grand Award as a way to identify and honor restaurants whose passion for wine buoyed extraordinary wine lists. The awards came at an opportune time. Wine sales were surging, the California wine industry was expanding rapidly, and an appreciation for wine was becoming an integral part of American culture.
