Wineries to Watch

Harvey Steiman
Issue: July 31, 2011

Wine Spectator pick some wineries to watch: Justin and Emma Lane, the minds behind Redheads Studio, left that project in 2006 to start Alpha Box & Dice, a négociant brand based in McLaren Vale. Introduced in the 2009 vintage, Frisk is a partnership of U.S. importer Old Bridge Cellars and winemaker Phil Sexton of Yarra Valley-based Giant Steps. Walter Clappis, who owned Ingoldby Winery in McLaren Vale for 20 years, has built The Hedonist around a biodynamic vineyard. Strathbogie Ranges, a cool-climate region high in the hills northeast of Melbourne, has had little impact in the United States, but the wines from this 2005 merger of two longtime local stars make a compelling introduction. Bruce Clugston makes the wines, and his wife, Fiona White, does "pretty much everything else" at Wineinc, their négociant business started in 2004.
