Alex Gambal, an American négociant based in Beaune, purchased two small parcels in Burgundy's grand cru Bâtard-Montrachet in March, part of a multiparty transaction between Domaine Brenot of Santenay and several purchasers; the price was undisclosed. Also, wine retailers had high hopes for an audience with the United States Supreme Court on the issue of direct interstate shipping from retailers to consumers. But in March, the justices declined to hear an appeal of a Fifth Circuit Court ruling in Texas that found the state could allow direct shipping by in-state retailers but ban shipping by out-of-state retailers.
