Many years ago, while walking down a street in Paris with my father, who was a dour sort, I asked him if he thought a family acquaintance was happy. "Happy?" he replied. "What's happy?" I thought of his stark view of the human condition during a recent conversation with a wine retailer who really loves wine, especially Italian wine, and strives to steer her clients to what she believes are the finest producers.
