A few days after the world learned that Robert Mondavi had died, I invited a few Tuscan wine producers to my house for dinner. The intention was to informally taste together some of their best 2006 reds, but the conversation inevitably turned from the high quality of an excellent vintage in the region to the passing of an icon from California.
