At first glance, the medieval town of Weissenkirchen, Austria, complete with a fortified Gothic church and surrounded by breathtakingly green countryside, seems a well-preserved page from the past. Rugged mountain slopes with terraced vineyards rise above the banks of the surging Danube River.
