
As you drive north from Phoenix, the landscape becomes a bleak travelogue of dirt and rock, accentuated now and then by cacti. But gradually the road rises into the high desert, and as you exit toward Sedona and weave along the narrow route, there is a moment—a certain bend in the road—when everything changes, and even the most jaded of desert drivers is tempted to pull over and take a better look.
