Tuscany has set a new standard for its red wines—2001 Masseto from Tenuta dell'Ornellaia. The pure Merlot, produced in the coastal region of Bolgheri, earned 100 points in my blind tastings this summer, and it is an amazing wine, one that perfectly illustrates the opulent richness and vibrant freshness that are the hallmarks of Tuscany's best reds.
