Australia's Riesling Surprise

Chardonnay gains a competitor among the best white wines from Down Under

Don't look now, but Australian Riesling is gaining fast on the country's white wine leader, Chardonnay. While Chardonnay represents about half of the approximately 250 white wines from Australia that Wine Spectator reviewed in the past year, Riesling, the next-largest category, shows more consistent quality.
