The 2013 California Cabernets are rolling out, and so far, they look enticing. This week's report has a mix of new releases from Lewis, Shafer (the Hillside Select), Ovid, Turnbull and Rudd. In Oregon, Antica Terra leads the Pinot pack, with Ken Wright and Chehalem chiming in. Italy offers two classic styles: bold Barolo and lush Amarone from the likes of Bartolo Mascarello, Luigi Baudana, Zenato and more.

If you're in the mood for Cabernet or Syrah, California and Washington have you covered, with bold reds up to 95 points. Lewis, Booker, Araujo, Figgins and K all deliver expressive examples. For bubbly drinkers, we have some delightful Champagnes, many from smaller producers. The firm reds of Barolo and silky Pinots of Oregon round this out.
