Dear Dr. Vinny,

Can you tell me the right way to pronounce Vosne-Romanée, specifically the first word? My friends say "Vohn," as if it rhymes with Rhône, but that doesn't seem right according to my rusty high-school French …

—Frank, Brooklyn, N.Y.

Dear Frank,

You must be in a good company of wine lovers if you and your friends are discussing Vosne-Romanée. This village in France's Burgundy region is home to six grand cru Pinot Noir vineyards, and some of the most prized wines in the world.

The “s” in “Vosne” is silent, and yes, it rhymes with “Rhône.” Vosne-Romanée should be pronounced "vōn roe mah nay."
