Dear Dr. Vinny,
My birthday party includes a wine tasting for eight friends. We'll be tasting a 1964 Château Lafite Rothschild against two other reds. What kind of food (if any) can we eat between tastings?
—Astrid, Vero Beach, Fla.
Dear Astrid,
It's easier to tell you what not to eat than to give you the perfect dish. The '64 is likely to be quite delicate, so avoid spicy, intense flavors or very rich dishes that could overpower the wine. Look for dishes that would match the flavors of the wine, and don't forget to consider the way the food is prepared. Foods that are poached or steamed pair best with delicate wines, whereas more full-bodied wines go better with braised, grilled or roasted dishes. Oh, and happy birthday!
—Dr. Vinny
