Hello there! I'm Dr. Vinifera, or "Vinny" for short. Ask me your toughest wine questions, from the technical aspects of winemaking to the fine points of etiquette. I hope you find my answers educational and even amusing. Looking for a particular answer? Check my archive and my FAQs.
Dear Dr. Vinny,
If I can't see the label on the wine bottle, is it OK to ask what wine we are drinking? Or might this be a breach of etiquette?
—Ken R., Vancouver, British Columbia
Dear Ken,
Of course you should ask! (Unless, of course, it's a blind tasting.) It's better to be inquisitive and educated than timid and ignorant. Wine geeks are notorious for scribbling wine-stained tasting notes, including the exact name and vintage of the bottle in front of them.
