Hello there! I'm Dr. Vinifera, or "Vinny" for short. Ask me your toughest wine questions, from the technical aspects of winemaking to the fine points of etiquette. I hope you find my answers educational and even amusing. Looking for a particular answer? Check my archive and my FAQs.
Dear Dr. Vinny,
I want to know, in your point scale, if a 95-point Don Melchor is the same (quality, body, taste, etc.) as a 95-point Château Pétrus. When you taste, does the producer have an impact on the score?
—Antonio, Celaya, Mexico
Dear Antonio,
First off, the producer (and the price) of a wine is never taken into account when we review wines. All the wines are tasted blind.
Secondly, a 95 is a 95. But there's more to life than just scores. Read the tasting note to see if the wine sounds like something you'd like. After all, a Pétrus is a very different wine than a Don Melchor.
