Ask Dr. Vinny

Do you have a question for Dr. Vinny? Ask it here...

Dear Dr. Vinny,

Wine Spectator does a nice job describing individual vintages of wine and letting the reader know their opinion of when the bottle should be opened. Why doesn't the winemaker let us know how long a bottle should lay down?

—Bob K., Muscatine, Iowa

Dear Bob,

Winemakers are usually very happy to talk about their wines and give their recommendations on when to drink them. An easy way to get a producer's take on the agebility of their wines is to check out their website; many winery websites have details about the wines they sell, and if they don't include drink recommendations, you should be able to find contact information to ask someone directly.
