Dear Dr. Vinny,

What are the 5 “S’s” of wine tasting?

—Charlie M., Houston

Dear Charlie,

Enjoying wine is really a pretty simple endeavor, but when it comes to taking a deeper look at what’s in your glass, I’ve heard of hints like the 5 S’s to guide you along. There are variations on the theme, but the five S’s I’ve heard of most are: see, swirl, smell (or sniff), sip and savor (or summarize).

I know there is probably one person out there who is going to roll their eyes at me and tell me that I’m making wine unnecessarily complicated, why not just drink and enjoy? Believe me, I drink and enjoy, but there’s also something magical about wine that really does incorporate all of your senses. If you slow down, take a moment to relish what kind of stimulus your body is taking in, you’re more likely to remember what you’re drinking, whether or not you like it, and why.
