Dear Dr. Vinny,

What type of wine should I serve with Christmas dinner?

—Nicole S., United States

Dear Nicole,

That’s a pretty broad question, and it really depends on what food you’re serving and who your guests are. Lucky for you, I have some broad advice.

Champagne or sparkling wines are really very festive, and my favorite thing to offer to a friend when they walk into my house. Not only does a glass of bubbly feel like an instant party, but sparkling wine is extremely food-friendly. It’s just as good to serve with brunch as with appetizers, and the perfect start to a multicourse meal.

If you’re not sure what kinds of wines your friends will like, focus on wines that you personally like, or have some meaning to you. I love it when a friend offers me a bottle and tells me a story about how they discovered it, or that they are sharing it with me because it is their go-to bottling. That’s a very thoughtful gesture.
