Dear Dr. Vinny,
How much wine should I pour into a glass? How full should the glass be?
—Stan, Williamsburg, Va.
I think a wineglass should be no more than a third of a glass full, and I actually like it less full than that. I’m a vigorous swirler, so I want plenty of room to do my thing without spilling the wine everywhere. It’s also good because I like to stick my nose in the glass to get a good whiff, and I don’t want a wet nose.
Too-full wineglasses are a pet peeve of mine. While we’re at it, I also want to be clear that one should always hold the wineglass by the stem, never by the bowl, and absolutely never as if it’s a brandy snifter!
