Hello there! I'm Dr. Vinifera, or "Vinny" for short. Ask me your toughest wine questions, from the technical aspects of winemaking to the fine points of etiquette. Dear Dr. Vinny,
How much wine should I pour into a glass? How full should the glass be?
—Stan, Williamsburg, Va.
I think a wineglass should be no more than a third of a glass full, and I actually like it less full than that. I’m a vigorous swirler, so I want plenty of room to do my thing without spilling the wine everywhere. It’s also good because I like to stick my nose in the glass to get a good whiff, and I don’t want a wet nose.
Too-full wineglasses are a pet peeve of mine. While we’re at it, I also want to be clear that one should always hold the wineglass by the stem, never by the bowl, and absolutely never as if it’s a brandy snifter!
