Hi, my name is Dr. Vinny, and I’m a wine advice columnist.
For the last nine years, my email inbox has been full of questions from wine lovers all over the world. In that time, we’ve published more than 1,300 responses—answers, advice and recommendations—and honestly, it never gets old. Every day I’m reminded about the curiosity, passion and excitement people feel about wine. I sense their frustration, their intimidation and their desire to make sense of what’s in the glass and the way people talk about it.
Once a reader asked me why I’m a silly-looking cartoon character. I replied that wine can come across as stuffy and serious, and I hope my masked face and goofy grin will make it easier for wine lovers to relax and ask questions.
As I start my 10th year as your superhero of wine, I want to be clear that I’m also learning every day from your questions—not just by researching the answers, but in finding a way to talk about wine that allows everyone to join in the conversation.
Inspired by the countdown of the Top 10 wines of 2013, I went back and pulled my own Top 10 favorite Dr. Vinny questions of this year. Some of these touch on the subjects of my most Frequently Asked Questions, but I think they do a good job of demonstrating the range of questions wine lovers have about this complicated but fascinating beverage and the way of life it encourages.
