Dear Dr. Vinny,

What are the specific figures that delineate the correct humidity of a wine cellar?

—Lawrence, Princeton, N.J.

Dear Lawrence,

The ideal humidity for a wine cellar is around 70 percent, and the ideal storage temperature for wine is around 55 degrees F. Humidity is affected by temperature, so keep both numbers in mind, because if you tinker with the temperature, you have to tinker with the humidity. If you're concerned about the humidity in your wine storage space, you can get a hygrometer to measure it—many digital models are available for about $30. You can also get a room or desktop humidifier, which are available at most hardware and appliance stores in about the $50 to $100 range.
