Aug. 03, 2012 SALVATORE PRINCIPE Malbec Mendoza 2011 (85 points, $10)

$15 to $30

Aug. 03, 2012 WATERKLOOF Circle of Life Red Stellenbosch 2009 (88 points, $25)

On the rustic side, with tar, smoldering tobacco and baker's chocolate notes, but also a good core of braised fig and steeped currant fruit. The tarry edge drives through the muscular finish, with a streak of savory herb in the background. Shows nice range, but not for everyone stylistically. Merlot, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2014. 6,000 cases made. —James Molesworth

More than $30

Aug. 03, 2012 EREDI FULIGNI Brunello di Montalcino 2007 (93 points, $89)

A fresh, sleek version, boasting floral, cherry, currant, licorice and spice aromas and flavors. A compelling mix of elegance and intensity, with a fine aftertaste of fruit, spice and mineral. Best from 2014 through 2026. 2,500 cases made. —Bruce Sanderson
