Subtle at first, with plum, blackberry and floral notes that gain in intensity through the finish, where more tar, mineral and graphite flavors emerge. Starts slow but has a lot in reserve, with vibrant acidity too. Let this flesh out in the cellar. Drink —James Molesworth

Feb. 26, 2005: MARCHESI DI GRÉSY Barbaresco Camp Gros Martinenga 2000 (92 points, $90)

Wonderful perfumes of strawberries, berries and fresh mushrooms. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a long, caressing finish. Very silky indeed. Layers of tannins, yet very refined. Lovely wine. Best after 2007. 1,150 cases made. From Piedmont, Italy. —James Suckling

Feb. 25, 2005: JOH. JOS. PRÜM Riesling Spätlese Mosel-Saar-Ruwer Graacher Himmelreich 2003 (91 points, $35)

Aromatic, this Riesling shows delicacy and balance in its floral, apricot and citrus notes. It's airy and appealing, with a mouthwatering tanginess. Drink now through 2020. From Germany. —Bruce Sanderson

Feb. 24, 2005: BENI DI BATASIOLO Barolo Vigneto Cerequio 2000 (91 points, $65)

Complex and subtle aromas of tea, spices and berries follow through to a full-bodied palate, with velvety tannins and a thick finish. This is dense and tight. Give it time. Best after 2007. 1,000 cases made. From Piedmont, Italy. —James Suckling
