Feb. 15, 2005: CAVALIER BARTOLOMEO Barolo Vigneti Solanotto Altinasso 2000 (92 points, $65)

Subtle and refined with plum, berry and strawberry aromas with just a hint of spice and cedar. Full-bodied, yet racy and refined with layers of silky tannins. Long finish. Should develop very nicely in the bottle. Best after 2008. 700 cases made. From Pie —James Suckling

Feb. 14, 2005: PODERI ELIA Barbaresco Serracapelli 2000 (93 points, $55)

Wonderful aromas of flowers and ripe fruit that turns to undertones of Indian spices. Full-bodied, with chewy yet round tannins and a long exotic fruit aftertaste. Hard not to drink the whole thing. Wonderful. New winery for me. Best after 2007. 450 cases —James Suckling

Feb. 12, 2005: SPREITZER Riesling Spätlese Gold Cap Rheingau Oestricher Lenchen 303 2003 (93 points, $49)

Not much aroma, then the flavors kick in on the palate, exuding apricot, orange, lemon and vanilla cream. Very concentrated, this tastes like a botrytis selection. It's impressive, if lacking a little in finesse. Best from 2006 through 2025. From Germany. —Bruce Sanderson

Feb. 11, 2005: CASCINA CUCCO Barolo Cerrati 2000 (93 points, $43)

Extremely complex red on the nose with raspberries, berries, spices and cedar. Full-bodied, with super elegant tannins and a long, long finish. A real beauty. Best after 2006. 380 cases made. From Piedmont, Italy. —James Suckling

Feb. 10, 2005: CONCHA Y TORO Cabernet Sauvignon Puente Alto Don Melchor 2001 (95 points, $45)

Gorgeous nose of black currant preserve and freshly roasted coffee, with a powerful, yet very silky palate of cassis, plum, blackberry, loam, mineral and dark chocolate flavors that glide through a superlong finish. Don't be deceived by its seeming access —James Molesworth
