Firm, explosive in flavor, with a big burst of tangy blackberry, plum and licorice flavor wrapped in a tight package, with spicy, dusky oak showing, all persisting impressively on a racy finish. Needs time to settle in. Best after 2008. 600 cases made. —Harvey Steiman

A superfine texture and pure flavors of apricot, orange and honey mark this silky auslese. Beautifully balanced and full of finesse, this has the structure and concentration to age for decades. Terrific length. Drink now through 2030. —Bruce Sanderson

Flamboyant, bursting with apricot, honey and mineral notes on a concentrated yet well-balanced frame. Enough acidity to offset the fruit intensity. Drink now through 2020. —Bruce Sanderson

Apr. 16, 2005: WITTMANN Riesling Auslese Rheinhessen Westhofener Morstein S 2003 (93 points, $75/500ml)

Passion fruit and pineapple galore in this opulent, almost racy '03 auslese. Has a very fine structure for the vintage and what tastes like a slight edge of botrytis to the flavors. Drink now through 2025. —Bruce Sanderson
