Feb. 02, 2012: DOMAINE CHARVIN Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2009 (94 points, $66)

This is very well-built, with a range of apple wood and toasted spice notes framing the core of crushed plum, blackberry and cassis. Dusty structure gives a long and grippy feel through the finish, while a tarry edge emerges on the back end. More oomph than usual for this estate, but it's all inlaid with fresh acidity and minerality for balance. Best from 2014 through 2025. 500 cases imported. —James Molesworth

Floral, minty overtones add depth to the rich cherry and tobacco flavors in this medium-weight, focused and distinctive wine. The finish lingers appealingly. Drink now through 2018. 2,950 cases made. —Harvey Steiman

Jan. 31, 2012: MARIUS DELARCHE Aloxe-Corton 2009 (92 points, $45)

This beauty has stunning fruit quality and texture for this level. Raspberry, cherry, spice and wet earth aromas and flavors mingle as a firm structure provides support. This is balanced, and lingers with earth and a hint of mineral accents. Best from 2013 through 2020. 450 cases made. —Bruce Sanderson

Jan. 30, 2012: ATTICUS Pinot Noir Yamhill-Carlton District Atticus Vineyard 2009 (93 points, $42)

Supple, silky, rich and layered with flavor, offering clove-scented blueberry, black currant and plum, nicely reined in to glide smoothly against refined tannins. Deft, and classically proportioned. Drink now through 2019. 120 cases made. —Harvey Steiman
