Jan. 31, 2003: CHAMPALOU Vouvray La Cuvée des Fondraux 2001 (89 points, $17)

Often overlooked, the Chenin Blanc wines of France's Loire Valley can offer unique flavors at friendly prices. This Vouvray has lovely almond, quince and fig flavors mingling in a bright, medium-bodied package, with a lingering note of honey. Just off-dry —James Molesworth

Jan. 30, 2003: SELBACH-OSTER Riesling Kabinett Mosel-Saar-Ruwer Zeltinger Schlossberg 2001 (90 points, $19)

A live-wire Riesling, whose apple, peach and mineral flavors are etched onto the steely structure. An amazing amount of flavor packed into a lightweight frame. Hedonists beware: This is for fans of acidity. Drink now through 2012.

Jan. 29, 2003: CONCHA Y TORO Carmenère Peumo Valley Terrunyo 2000 (90 points, $29)

Concha y Toro has really stepped up the quality of its higher-end wines, as this delicious Carmenère shows. Lovely flesh and balance here, with ripe blackberry and plum flavors, suave toast, and a long, creamy finish that delivers another wave of fruit. —James Molesworth
