Jan. 06, 2005: CASCINA GARITINA Barbera d'Asti Superiore Neuvsent’ 900 2001 (90 points, $27)

Pretty strawberry and blackberry jam aromas with hints of toasted oak. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a light vanilla and chocolate aftertaste with fruit. This is a new winery for me and an excellent Barbera. Drink now. 2,000 cases made. From Piedmon —James Suckling

Jan. 05, 2005: BOLLIG-LEHNERT Riesling Spätlese Mosel-Saar-Ruwer Piesporter Goldtröpfchen 2003 (90 points, $18)

Very ripe and exotic, evoking cantaloupe, mango and licorice notes on a lush frame. It offers very good acidity, with a lovely finish. Well done. Drink now through 2012. 525 cases made. From Germany. —James Molesworth

Jan. 04, 2005: J. WEGELER ERBEN Riesling Spätlese Rheingau Rüdesheimer Berg Rottland 2003 (89 points, $30)

Very attractive flavors of peach, apricot and lemon mark this moderately structured Riesling. Not the clarity and harmony of the best in this category, but may just need time to settle down. Drink now through 2015. From Germany. —Bruce Sanderson

Jan. 03, 2005: DR. F. WEINS-PRÜM Riesling Spätlese Mosel-Saar-Ruwer Wehlener Sonnenuhr 2003 (89 points, $29)

Rich and fleshy, there's a bright structure in this '03 Riesling supporting the peach and lime notes. There's an airy texture and moderate length on the finish. Drink now through 2012. From Germany. —Bruce Sanderson

Vibrant and intense, serving up a bright beam of passion fruit, grapefruit, grass and tangy nectarine flavors that dance with lemon and lime peel notes on a mouthwatering finish. Drink now through 2006. 400 cases made. From California. —James Laube
