Jan. 13, 2005: CONCHA Y TORO Carmenère Rapel Valley Casillero del Diablo 2003 (86 points, $15)

Lots of fleshy plum and black cherry fruit, with pretty notes of vanilla, tobacco and lavendar in the background. A good introduction to the grape. Drink now. From Chile. —James Molesworth

Jan. 13, 2005: TERRE DA VINO Barolo 2000 (90 points, $29)

Loads of ripe and up-front fruit on this, with just hints of cedar and dried mushrooms. Full-bodied, with a dense and ripe palate. Pleasing finish. Best ever from this big cooperative. Good value too. Best after 2005. 10,000 cases made. From Piedmont, Ita —James Suckling

Jan. 12, 2005: PROVISOR Syrah Dry Creek Valley 2002 (90 points, $30)

This wine offers a pure, rich display of ripe blackberry, boysenberry and plummy notes, that are offset by a dusty wild berry, violet and sage scent and supported by tight, firm, grainy tannins. Best from 2006 through 2012. 440 cases made. From California —James Laube

Jan. 11, 2005: JOHANNISHOF Riesling Spätlese Rheingau Johannisberger Klaus 2003 (90 points, $24)

Flavors of lemon curd, cream and mineral hightlight this medium weight, intense Riesling. It's lively and lingers on the finish, with a crispness around the gums. Drink now through 2015. 50 cases made. From Germany. —Bruce Sanderson

Jan. 10, 2005: VON HÖVEL Riesling Kabinett Mosel-Saar-Ruwer Oberemmeler Hütte 2003 (90 points, $20)

Is this 2003? Almost racy, here's an opulent Riesling with a fine, vibrant structure and intense flavors of lime, peach and mineral. Perhaps not the length of a great year like 2001, but very well done and expressive. Drink now through 2012. From Germany. —Bruce Sanderson
