Less than $15

Mar. 20, 1999: CONCHA Y TORO Cabernet Sauvignon Maipo Valley Trio 1996 (85 points, $9)

This firm Chilean red shows the smoky, eucalyptus character typical of many Maipo Cabs, with very firm tannins and good concentration. It doesn't offer a lot of fruit, but should match well with smoked and grilled meats. Drink now through 2002.

Mar. 19, 1999: HESS SELECT Cabernet Sauvignon California (85 points, $11)

Here's an inexpensive California Cabernet that should also be easy to find. Rich, ripe and focused, with balanced flavors of tart cherry and berry, herb and vanilla oak notes. Drink now through 2002.

Mar. 18, 1999: BLACK OPAL Cabernet-Merlot South Eastern Australia 1997 (85 points, $11)

This blend is ripe and flavorful, with pretty berry, vanilla and spice notes lingering on the velvety finish. Richer than most midpriced reds. 90,000 cases made.

Mar. 13, 1999: BANROCK STATION Semillon-Chardonnay South Eastern Australia (84 points, $6)

This blend of two white grapes offers lots of ripe fig and pear flavor on a supple frame, finishing juicy and soft, just short of sweet. Drink now. 60,000 cases made.

Mar. 11, 1999: SEAVIEW Brut Australia 1997 (87 points, $8)

This fresh-tasting Aussie sparkling wine offers richer texture and more spice than most, finishing round and generous with dried pear and toasty flavors. Drink now. 18,000 cases made.
