You have to wonder how much prestige cuvée Champagne is consumed in dark, loud and smoky clubs around the world. I was in Les Cave du Roi last weekend in St. Tropez, and I saw buckets full of 1999 Roederer Cristal being consumed like bottles of Evian at a beach clubs during the day.
Cristal is definitely the Champagne of choice in clubs and restaurants on the Cote d’Azur. (I think it’s more because of the clear bottle and label than anything else.) But according to the waiter for our table at the Cave: “Dom Pérignon is the Champagne for people who know something about wine.”
That’s what I was drinking with my friends – DP.
I have to admit that, if I were dropping $400 on a bottle of Champagne, I would always rather drink the DP than Cristal. It’s a finer, rounder and more serious fizz in my book. The 1996, if you can find it, is the bomb. I love that wine – I would have put it at 97 points last time I drank it. The 1998, the vintage that is currently being served in most clubs and hotels in Cote d’Azur, is slightly less firm and intense, but an excellent bottle nonetheless. I considered it a 93-pointer. The 1999 Cristal is slightly more aggressive with more acidity and bubbles than the Dom. It’s not in the same league. But it's still outstanding quality, 90 points in my opinion.
I remember two months back when Jay-Z was angry about a comment from the owner of Roederer, and he was going to ban Cristal from his clubs and his fans were going to stop drinking the stuff. From what I can see in a few of the top clubs in Europe this summer, Cristal is selling just fine with or without his support. But I think people would be better off drinking Dom – not that anyone really tastes the great fizz at 3 a.m. with music blaring and everyone dancing….
