There are some striking differences between my current life as a winery owner and my previous life as a writer of military software. Aside from the obvious (better beverage selection), there’s a connection with the “end user” that was missing in my previous career. I never had a Navy sailor come up to me and tell me how much they loved how the ADCAP torpedo controls worked, or how easy it was to launch a Tomahawk missile. Never happened.
So it’s always fun when we get feedback from one of our customers telling us how much they enjoyed one of our wines. It’s something we never get tired of. Then there are those notes that humble us a bit. We’ve gotten e-mails about how a bottle of our wine helped pass the evening after a friend or loved one got some bad news. Kimberly and I are often touched that something we make can mean so much to someone we’ve never even met.
Then there’s that connection with a customer that lifts your spirits in a completely amazing way. We’ve had people tell us that they were drinking one of our wines when they proposed. And just this past weekend, we had a customer actually use a bottle of our wine to propose to his girlfriend.
I’d gotten an e-mail from Robert Yamada asking to visit the winery this past Monday. During this past harvest, we’d had to say no to all requests to visit, because we were so busy. Luckily, Robert’s request was for one of the first days we were going to be finished. A day or so before he and his girlfriend were going to visit, Robert sent me the following note:
“Also, this weekend has kinda turned into an engagement weekend! I'm planning on proposing to my girlfriend, Carlin, on Saturday when we're up there and I thought you'd like to hear about one of the things I've got planned to surprise her. I made a custom LWC label with our picture on it that I put on a bottle of '04 Garys'. Anyway, I thought you might get a kick out of it. Take care, wish me luck and I'll see you next week!”
