I wasn’t going to blog this but I have decided to unveil what may be the most exciting news to come out of Bordeaux for a long time. While I was tasting in the cellars of Chateau Latour, I came across a barrel that was marked “reserve de patron” – which is basically the reserve of the owner. He, of course, is none other than the fashion magnate Francois Pinault. After asking about ten times about this, Latour’s president Frederic Engerer told me that it was a pure Cabernet Sauvignon made from 150-year-old vines that had never been grafted. Yes! These ancient vines are still on their own rootstock. Apparently, they have become resistant to the phylloxera louse.
I was startled to say the least. How could this happen? And why didn’t anyone in Bordeaux know about this secret wine?
I twisted Engerer’s arm for some time and he finally let me taste this killer Cabernet. It was of monumental proportions. It was the mother lode. It was the greatest pure Cabernet I tasted in my life. It was dark as ink with a nose of roses, lilacs, spices, chocolate, raspberries….my head was spinning with free association. The palate was a blockbuster of dense concentrated fruit with silky tannins that lasted at least five minutes on my palate. Yes. I even used a stopwatch to time the finish! I wasn’t sure if I should score this or not. It’s only available on the market in Paris, so why bother? But I felt it was my journalistic duty to report to you my findings.
Engerer said that the wine would be sold in Paris as futures for 1000 Euros a half-bottle through one wine shop near Pinault’s house. So he can pop down to his local wine shop and buy some. The wine shop is call Poisson d’Avril .
The French translate for that is: April Fools Day.
I hope you all have a great April Fools Day and have a good laugh….!!!!!
