You have to be careful leaving open olive-oil bottles on the dinner table, especially late at night and when the olive-oil bottles look like wine bottles. Last night, my buddy Thomas and his two Korean girlfriends came for dinner. It was a simple outdoor affair. We made some salad, and I picked up some pizzas from our local pizzeria in San Guistino Valdarno.
I decided to serve a couple of Barolos – 1999 Corino Vecchie Vigne and 1999 M. Marengo Brunate. Both were drinking very well, although they were a little lean. This is the style of the 1999 vintage, which is outstanding but overrated by many, in my opinion. Lots of people, including Barolo producers themselves, say that 1999 is one for cellaring for a long time. I think the wines are good now, but they will improve with age. To me, it is the least good of the six outstanding years in Barolo – 1996-2001. With dinner, I scored the two wines 92 points and 90 points, respectively.
I also served a 1997 Pio Cesare Ornato, and it was fantastic. Full bodied, with loads of fruit and velvety tannins, it was fresh, powerful and structured. (I gave it 96 points.) It was still a baby – I would leave it for another five years.
Anyway, there were the bottles of Barolo on the table, as well as a bottle of olive oil from Tenuta San Guido (Sassicaia). Thomas was fishing for the bottle of Ornato and mistakenly topped up his glass with the olive oil! Luckily, he noticed before taking a mouthful of extra virgin.
