It’s always difficult for me to say goodbye, so I usually shy away from doing so. I believe that is because I don’t like the finality of it. I much prefer taking the “Until we meet again …” route because it seems to leave me in a better frame of mind. Maybe this is a personality trait that speaks to why I have been with chef Emeril as a sommelier for 11 years. (That also may have something to do with the fact that I have a good thing going.)
As I sit here writing this farewell piece and reflecting upon the past couple of months, an endless barrage of memories flashes through my mind. These memories range from the friendships that I have made during the time I have been writing these blogs to the topics and responses posted here.
It’s amazing what I have learned. No matter how knowledgeable I thought I was on a subject, a post would elicit a response from someone with a completely fresh perspective. The thread would then take a new and unexpected direction. I can honestly say that, while writing here, I probably learned more than anyone, and I want to thank all those who posted responses for their knowledge and insight. I am honored and humbled by the range and scope of people who took the time to respond.
I would also like to thank Marvin Shanken, Thomas Matthews and Dana Nigro for giving me the opportunity to express my thoughts and views here. I believe that forums like this are important to the growth of the entire wine industry, and I feel that the industry leaders agree, since I see them taking precious time to post here as well.
I also owe a debt of gratitude to the editorial staff that shared blog-space with me and the other guest bloggers. Their comments and unique perspectives add greatly to the body of knowledge being accumulated.
As we enter this new year of 2007, I am grateful to you for letting me be a part of your 2006. And now, without goodbyes, I leave you. Until we meet again …
