I still visit dozens of wineries each year, but usually only for work-related reasons.
Come weekends or holidays, or even when guests arrive in town, I try to keep my distance from the cellars and tasting rooms.
I always like seeing vineyards, though, and on Saturday I’m headed up Mount Veeder for an event that bridges sightseeing, vineyards, wine tasting and an outdoor music concert.
Chateau Potelle is hosting Kacey Jones for a 4 p.m. performance (you can order tickets from the winery), and she is one amazing singer-song writer. You may have heard her on Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion, and her latest recording is called Kacey Jones Sings Mickey Newberry, a tribute to the late singer.
If you live in Napa, or nearby, this is the perfect time to tour the rugged mountain vineyards of Mount Veeder, which is home to dozens of mostly small vineyards and wineries.
There are scores of breathtaking views, with vineyards lined by towering trees, huge boulders, deep canyons and steep hillsides. It’s such a contrast to the valley floor, where the vines seem so peaceful this time of year.
Kacey Jones’ music should be just as captivating as the environs.
If this sounds like a shameless plug for a friend, well, it is.
But I can’t think of a better excuse or time to savor Mount Veeder.
