Had some friends over for dinner; a number were Tuscan winemakers, along with the head of Cuban cigar imports in Italy. The latter is a very keen wine drinker. In fact, he used to write about wine for a number of Italian wine publications years ago.
Anyway, after drinking two great 1997s in magnum – Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino Cerretalto and Roberto Voerzio Barolo Vecchie Vite dei Capalot e delle Brunate Riserva – (I put both of them at 98 points last night), I decided to really do a “bella figura” and pull the cork on one of my last bottles of 1990 Latour. This is a wine that I gave 100 points, and it is one of the modern classics from the estate. So I ran down to my cellar and found the bottle.
What a dummy! Yes, it was great. But the wine was so tight that by the time everyone was down to a few drops in their glass it still hadn’t opened up. If only I had planned ahead and decanted it a few hours before. So much for making a good impression, and spontaneous trips to the cellar….
The wine is so gorgeous but so youthful and tight at the moment. 100 points? Yes. But it’s still a baby. Not giving away much at the moment.
