This past Saturday night in Myrtle Beach, my buddies and I were in the middle of a crazy golf trip. We’d just played four rounds of golf in two days (we'd go on to play a fifth the next day) under a bright sun, interrupted by a half day of cold rain and wind (which we played through). We were sitting around the dining table in our villa watching dramatic lightning strikes fill the nighttime sky outside.
There’s nothing resembling gourmet in Myrtle Beach, so we’d brought our own steaks with us. There was nary a spice shaker or pepper mill in the villa's kitchen to work with; all I could do was pan-fry the steaks on an electric range. I’d augmented things with some French fries and fried chicken from the local supermarket’s freezer section.
Luckily, one of the gang had schlepped down a magnum of 2000 Château La Nerthe Châteauneuf-du-Pape (along with a few other bottles), which we happily drank from cheap glass tumblers. It’s amazing what good wine (and some hearty appetites) can do to some simple food. It all tasted great, and our backs actually loosened up – a little.
Simple food and good wine after a long day of fun. Is there anything better than that? Like Miles in Sideways with his paper cup of wine in the burger joint, we’ve all had to make do somewhere along the line. No Riedel glasses. No truffles. No napkins. Just the wine itself. And isn’t it funny how those moments stand out in our wine memories right alongside all the great, big, fancy meals?
