My time as a guest blogger has sadly come to an end. The nice people at Wine Spectator allowed me to stay way longer than we’d initially discussed – and I’ve now officially run out of things to say. I never thought that could happen.
I’d like to thank Thomas Matthews and Marvin Shanken for the unbelievable opportunity they afforded me to stand atop one of the world’s tallest Internet soapboxes. I truly appreciate the freedom they gave me to talk about anything I wanted—from silly stuff like stacking picking bins and creating bad poetry about barrels to controversial issues including water/acid additions and biodynamic farming. I was never censored or edited for content.
I did get a LOT of help behind the scenes from Dana Nigro. She took what I wrote and made it comprehensible. Engineers turned winemakers will never be confused with English majors. Thank you, Dana, for making me look like a professional writer.
The biggest thing I take away from this experience is a newfound respect for the Wine Spectator editors. How often have you looked at what someone does and said, “Heck, I could do that”? Well let me tell you, this ain’t so easy. It requires a level of creativity and professional dedication that’s tough to match.
As I expected, writing the blog reinforced my initial impression: What the heck was my name doing alongside those true professionals? I’ll be very happy to quietly slip back to making wine … and occasionally posting a comment now and then. At least I got a chance to take a few at bats in the big leagues, for which I am extremely grateful. Thanks again Wine Spectator!!!
