Wine Spectator has asked me to join them as a guest blogger, which is for me a real challenge. Indeed, a Frenchman from the northern Médoc contributing to an American media outlet should lead to an interesting situation … Nevertheless, I will try to play the "game."
I will be blogging during the most intense period of the year for me, apart from harvest, of course, known as the en primeur campaign. Unlike wines from most regions of the world, the great wines of Bordeaux have the extraordinary privilege of being sold nearly two years before they are actually bottled. We will surely have the occasion in the course of the coming weeks to discuss some advantages and disadvantages of this unique system.
For about three weeks during March and April, much of the wine world—merchants, wine critics and consumers—will travel to Bordeaux to taste the 2006 vintage. At Cos-d’Estournel, we will welcome more than 1,500 tasters during that time, coming from faraway places ranging from Kazakhstan to Venezuela to India to Alaska.
For me, this moment of the year is fascinating as I personally welcome all of the visitors and will get a real feel of their perception of the vintage. Of course, I will send some messages of my own, about the market and, eventually, prices for Cos 2006. But perhaps you would rather I talk about our politics and run a poll on who will be the next French president in May?
Last year, we had a wine merchant from Ukraine asking us what was the secret behind the quality of the 2005 vintage at Cos and of course in Bordeaux in general. I told him that we had made a deal with the priest of the church in St.-Estèphe. We gave him six magnums of Cos 2000 so he could pass a contract with his boss and ensure the quality of the vintage. My Ukrainian friend didn’t believe it. I look forward to seeing him again this April, and will keep you posted on this year's futures campaign.
