I signed up for a Twitter account, something I have resisted so far because I lead a life I fear most folks would find dull. I mean, who cares if I roast a whole chicken breast and drink some leftover Chardonnay for dinner with my wife? At some meals I don’t even drink wine. The horror.
Social media are not exactly new for me. I have a Facebook account, but I use it mostly to keep in touch with real friends and family, not the world at large. Twitter seems like a whole different deal. The format strikes me as ideal for quick thoughts on wine or food experiences that might not make it into my blog or the magazine.
Sometimes fun stuff does happen in my life. Folks in the food and wine world cross my path. I meet interesting winemakers and chefs, so I might shoot out a tweet about what I heard them say or saw them do. Bits of news that don’t merit a whole story, or even a blog, could be tweets.
When I go out to eat in my home town, San Francisco, I prefer to haunt familiar spots. I am not rushing out to check out the hottest new thing—except on assignment. You are as likely to find a tip on a burger, burrito or pizza as on the experiments of a cutting-edge chef. But there will be both.
I don’t travel or even sample wine all the time. My tastings of Australian, Washington and Oregon wines (my Wine Spectator beats) are scheduled in two-day sweeps a couple of times per month. Concentrated sessions like that might yield a flurry of tweets on Tuesday and Wednesday, then nothing to report for a week.
Actually, that might be a good thing for those who choose to follow me on Twitter. Guaranteed, you won’t be bombarded with stuff all the time, only when I have something to share.
How do you use Twitter? Do you follow a lot of wine folks? Friends? Celebs? Send out tweets yourself on your latest wine and food experiences? What would you like to read from me?
I am off to New York for a week or so of mostly non-work activities. The iPhone will be coming out of the pocket for 140-character updates from time to time. Join the fun.
