I’ll continue with my notes on recent visits to growers and houses in Burgundy in my next blog. In this post, the topic is also Burgundy, but a little bit of Burgundy in New York earlier this week.
Becky Wasserman was in town, with her husband, Russell Hone, son Peter and the team from her export company, Le Serbet, to celebrate the company's 30th anniversary. Le Serbet represents growers primarily from Burgundy, but also Champagne and other parts of France, and a few estates from Italy.
Becky started the company after moving to France and discovering wine. After a small stint selling barrels and working as an agent for Kermit Lynch, Le Serbet was born in 1979.
Over the years, Becky represented small growers and introduced them to Burgundy lovers in the United States. Some of her early suppliers, Alain Burguet, Denis Bachelet, Michel Lafarge and Domaine du Château de Chorey are still with Becky and Le Serbet today. For many of them, she has made a difference, and it showed in their appreciation and presence at the tasting.
Alain Burguet, Denis Bachelet and Frédéric Lafarge were there, along with Dominique Lafon, Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier, François Mikulski, Jean-Charles Le Bault de la Morinière of Bonneau du Martray, Nicolas Rossignol, Louis-Michel Liger-Belair, Sylvain Pataille, Virgile Lignier, Olivier Merlin and Jean-Philippe Bret, among others.
The tasting, held at Tribeca Grill, was a mob scene, packed with members of the trade and many longtime friends of Becky and Russell. I was impressed with the number of young people too. For some of them, this may be their first introduction to Becky and her portfolio.
Becky is as down to earth as they come and that has drawn people to her over the years. In her typical humble fashion, when I congratulated her on 30 years of exporting Burgundy she said “It’s not me, it’s the growers who have done it.”
Congratulations to Becky, Russell and the Le Serbet team.
