Not much time to write today, but I had lunch in the Médoc at Château du Tertre with the Dutch owner Eric Albada Jelgersma, manager Alexander Van Beek and Patricio de la Fuente Saaez. Patricio is a friend from Hong Kong who runs a wine importing company and sells thousands of cases to mainland China as well as Hong Kong and Macau.
Eric is also the owner of Château Giscours, which I think is making better and better wines. I still remember years ago coming across the amazing 1970, which was unknown but luscious and rich with beautiful fruit. It’s a shame that the track record in quality winemaking has been spotty until recently.
The 2005 should end up very close in quality to the 1970 with age. And the 2004 is a sleeper, and excellent. We drank a 2000, 1975 and 1964 Giscours at lunch. All the wines were outstanding. The 1964 was served blind and I guessed 1966. I thought that 1964 was a wash out for Margaux, like most of the rest of the Médoc? Not the Giscours—plummy, soft and friendly.
It was sort of fitting that Patricio was there, because I can’t believe the number of people touring the vineyards from the Far East. It seems that every other car driving up the main road to the châteaus in the Médoc were full of people from the Orient.
Patricio said that China will be THE fine wine market in a few years and Hong Kong will be the fine wine capital. I think HK already is Fine Wine Central. I heard that there will be more than 100 wine auctions next year in Hong Kong. “It seems that everyone with money wants to be a wine collector now,” Patricio said.
That said, the Chinese still do not buy futures on a whole but prefer to buy fine Bordeaux after it is bottled and shipped. So I wonder who bought the 2008s, if the Bordelais are patting themselves on the back for all their sales? I know we Americans only bought a limited amount.
Anyway, a lot of the action in VinExpo is happening outside the fair grounds in châteaus and wine merchants’ offices. The actual fair may be down this year, but the business for Bordeaux is still full of energy this week.
