I had an interesting conversation last night with a friend from Los Angeles who comes from a family of longtime wine collectors. He said that he and his father were buying a lot of special bottles from collectors in Southern California, mostly Bordeaux and Burgundies from the 1980s and 1970s. They were paying cash. I bet it’s the same in other parts of the United States.
“Its crazy to be buying young Burgundies and Bordeaux, such as 2005s, when there are so many great bottles of aged wine for drinking and people want to sell,” he said.
He added that collectors were more willing to part with their precious bottles for cash from friends then “having to hassle with the auction houses” (which levy a seller’s and buyer’s commission).
It’s an interesting world out there. There are lots of excellent bottles to be bought and consumed at the moment if you have some spare cash. It’s a drinker's market.
If I had some greenbacks around and had the connections in the States, I would be buying bottles of 1982, 1989 and 1990 Bordeaux from the highest level I could afford. In addition, I would be looking at 1989 and 1990 Burgundies, both white and red. A few Rhônes would be good as well, from similar vintages, not to mention some top California Cabs from 1995, 1996 and 1997. Why not throw a few Ports in as well from 1970 or 1977?
My prediction is that it’s only going to get better to buy in the next six to eight months. So, cash is king. And drinking is queen.
