It was Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC) Day in Napa Valley this past Wednesday. Wilson Daniels, the St. Helena importer and exclusive agent for the famed domaine's wines, hosted a private tasting of the 2006 vintage, including Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Echézeaux, Grands Echézeaux, Romanée St.-Vivant, Richebourg, Vosne-Romanée and Montrachet. I’ll share my thoughts about the wine soon, as I’m sure my colleague Bruce Sanderson will as well. He covers Burgundy for us.
This tasting affords critics like me a chance to browse through what many consider to be the ultimate Pinot Noir-terroir experience, not to mention taking a trip back in time to some incredibly memorable wines and wine experiences of years past.
I’ve only purchased one bottle of DRC in my life. But as my friends who have a small cache of these wines will attest, I’m always willing to help them empty their prized bottles.
There are few experiences comparable to drinking great well-aged DRC. The younger versions are usually very tightly wound and about as opposite as you can get from New World Pinot.
While I don’t cover Burgundy, I’m interested in the traits and characteristics of these young wines and wondering if we’ll ever taste anything quite like this from California, or anywhere else in the New World.
I hope we do. It’s important to remember that the Burgundians have had centuries to identify their best sites, perfect their vineyard techniques and refine their wines. Most New World Pinots have barely been around a decade or so, if even that, so ours is still very much in an experimental phase and is a work in progress.
