I made it home from Geneva in my car. I feel like sleeping in my car because my heating doesn’t work very well in my house! That’s Italy! I better light some fires in the fireplaces.
I keep thinking about the amazing thing I drank the night of the inauguration. As I wrote on Tuesday, I spent it with Robert de Luxembourg, who has an interesting family background in American politics as well as wine being the head of the family who owns first-growth Haut-Brion and La Mission-Haut-Brion.
We went to a local restaurant after Pres. Obama’s inauguration speech and downed a bottle of Haut-Brion’s second wine, Bahans Haut-Brion. It was from 1999, a good but not great vintage. The wine was drinking very well. I will post a note on it soon.
But the tour de force came after dinner when we walked back to his house and drank a glass of 1858 Bisquit Dubouche Grande Fine Cognac. Yes, 1858! The Cognac was amazing, with violets, caramel, dried apricot skin and sweet fruit. It was dense and slightly sweet, like an old rum. It was thick and powerful with a smoky, dried fruit aftertaste. It was almost like an ancient Yquem. 98 points, non-blind. I am no Cognac drinker. In fact, I generally stay away from the stuff. But that 1858 Cognac was truly a great spirit. Mind-blowing.
We looked on-line and noticed that the Lincoln-Douglas debates occurred that same year. Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas debated seven times during their run for senator of Illinois. Douglas won that election, but Lincoln, of course, would a few years later become our great president. And we know how Pres. Obama reveres the man like most of us.
Anyway, it’s always amazing to drink great ancient wines and spirits. It puts your mind in a journey back in time.
