I have fallen back in love with Grenache. In the 1980s when I lived in Paris, I used to regularly go to the Southern Rhône and visit Châteauneuf producers from Beaucastel to Rayas to Telegraphe. I was always tasting and drinking Southern Rhônes with my buddies at Willi’s Wine Bar, particularly Tim Johnston and Mark Williamson. I have many funny stories about visiting the area back then, when it was everything but in fashion to do so as it is now.
I love the character of Grenache. It can have the subtle floral and strawberry character of Burgundy but it shows the richness and power of Hermitage. It’s this contrast of elegance and decadence that turns me on with the grape. I would love to know if you have any favorites from other places than the Southern Rhône.
I had a bottle of Lançon Pére & Fils Domaine de la Solitude 2001 Réserve Secrèt last night. I loved the balance to the wine even though it's 15.5 percent alcohol. And it showed lots of tar, light strawberry jam and asphalt character. There was so much going on. The palate was round and viscous yet soft and enticing. Just right now. 91 points, non-blind.
Those good times and great bottles were haunting me in Mexico during my various trips there this year in Baja. The old vine Grenache is extraordinary. And it’s why I have decided to buy a barrel of 2007 Grenache with some buddies of mine and bottle it ourselves. We are buying it from Hugo d’Acosta, the famous Mexican winemaker. The wine comes from his small cooperative in the Valle de Guadalupe, La Escuelita.
Great Grenache is had to find, and I believe Mexico is one of the places that has the soil and climate to grow it. Can’t wait to get the wine into the bottle.
