It's absolutely boiling in Italy at the moment. It's about 100 degrees Fahrenheit during the day, and it cools down to the high 70s or low 80s at night. I eat alfresco most every night. A crisp white from Alto Adige seems to fit most nights, although a red sometimes comes out of my cool cellar, which is about 65 degrees Fahrenheit with the air conditioner on.
What I find interesting is that the summer in Italy is not Bordeaux drinking weather. It just doesn't seem to work. I have had many bottles of Bordeaux this summer at some friends' houses, as well as a few at mine, and they just don't taste very good while dining outside. They seem sort of thin and dull in most cases.
I would much prefer to drink a Tuscan red or something from the south of Italy. I also like Barolos, if they are opened at cellar temperature. In addition, I think reds from the Rhône, such as Châteauneuf-du-Pape, are delicious for outdoor dining. I like wines from Provence, such as Bandol, as well.
Maybe it's a question of where the wines were born? Bordeaux has some hot weather, but on a whole it's much cooler than most of Italy. It's an Atlantic-influenced climate, while Italy, Provence and Southern Rhône are more Mediterranean. Anyway, I have been thinking about this every night when I uncork a cool red, and I am curious if anyone else has had the same experience.
